Is investing in the S&P 500
A great way to get rich?
The Standard &
Poor's 500 is a market-value-weighted index of
500 stocks that are traded on the
New York Stock Exchange
(NYSE),
American Stock Exchange (AMEX), and the
NASDAQ National
Market System.
Standard and
Poor’s wanted a way of measuring how the largest
and most successful companies trading in the
stock market were doing on a daily, weekly,
monthly and annual basis. They came up with an
index or listing of the top five hundred
companies and measured their growth.
The S&P 500 is
often viewed as the best of the best publicly
traded companies. On any given day you’re able
to look at the stock performance of the top five
hundred companies just by checking this index.
S&P
500 Mutual Funds
Looking for a
relatively conservative strategy for investing
in stocks?
How about an S&P
500 index mutual fund?
A mutual fund is
a group of stocks put together in one basket.
When you invest in an S&P 500 mutual fund, you
are still putting money at risk but it’s much
lower. At the same time you are anticipating a
larger return than if you invested your income
in a savings account. A great source for
reaching mutual funds is Morning Star.
If you find an
S&P 500 fund you like, start investing in it
little by little. Over time you’ll see your
money grow. In a good mutual fund your cash
will grow faster than just saving it.
