What Is A "Covered Call?"

One of the strategies that I personally use is called "covered call writing" and it basically means you own a stock and then "write a covered call" against it. This gives another person the option to buy (sometimes called "call away") your stock at a certain fixed price within a certain period of time. While this method gives up a little of the potential upside to owning a stock, it increases the chances that you will make money. This is what trading is all about, decreasing the risk of losing money while increasing the probability of making money.
Everyone buys a stock expecting it's price to increase, and therefore earn money for the trader. When you write a covered call, you are giving the option to another person to purchase your stock at a lower price than they expect to sell it at, which gives them the potential of making money. The benefit to writing a covered call is that you collect the offset money immediately, and it is yours to keep. If the stock increases to a certain point, the person who bought your call will exercise his option and the stock will sell to him. If the stock decreases in price at the point of the expiration of the option, then your loss is minimized by the money you collected when you wrote the covered call option.
